Our Learning

How are phonics taught at Bawdeswell?

Read Write Inc.

Bawdeswell Primary School.

Reception and Year 1.

In Read Write Inc. Phonics lessons, children learn to read accurately and fluently with good comprehension. They learn to form each letter, spell correctly, and compose their ideas step-by step.

The children rapidly learn sounds and the letters, or groups of letters; they need to represent them in three sets of speed sounds lessons. We have simple and enjoyable mnemonics, which help the children to grasp the letter-sound correspondences quickly. This learning is taught and consolidated every day. High frequency words that are not phonically regular are taught as tricky words (red words) and are practised frequently.

The children read phonic books, which closely match the children current new learning and consolidate what they have been learning about.

These books are read focusing on accuracy, fluency and comprehension.

Parents are encourage to compliment this school reading by reading daily at home. The school library is open so children and parents can choose books, which match their children’s current reading ability, information books and bedtime books.
