Our Learning

English

shutterstock_142485085We have designed our English curriculum to develop the children’s ability to positively speak, read and write fluently.

At Bawdeswell Primary we follow the National Curriculum guidance for English. The learning is sequenced to enable the children to always build on previous learning to deepen and broaden their understanding of English.  Reading continues to be a focus in school. A reading incentive scheme is  used to encourage the children to read at home regularly.

We follow the RWI scheme in Reception and Year 1.  (Please see the document How are phonics taught at Bawdeswell?) . Links are made to other areas of the Curriculum including links to Computing (Fairy Tales) Science (Animals) and RE (Why do Christians celebrate Christmas?) We have a well-stocked library which is open to the children and parents and is a positive space for children and parent to share books and borrow books for home reading.

Our sequencing documents show how English is taught and how the learning is planned, sequenced, and developed from Reception up to Year 6 in preparation for High School

This is underpinned by our Values and Ethos statement which shows our aim is for the children to

Love your learning,   Have a positive attitude,

This is also underpinned in our ‘Learning Wheel’

Have a love of reading and writing.
